  • IBM and Golden State Medical Supply Create Drug Safety Model to Help Combat Counterfeiting
Electronic Pedigree Services Enable Small and Mid-Sized Drug Companies to Adopt "Smart" Drug Safety TechnologyARMONK, N.Y. and CAMARILLO, Calif. - IBM and contract manufacturer and third party logistics provider Golden State Medical Supply (GSMS) today announced the two companies have worked together to help drug companies comply with stringent prescription drug pedigree regulations in advance of state and federal mandates.Global counterfeit drug sales will grow at almost twice the rate of legitimate pharmaceutical commerce by 2010 according to estimates from the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest. The organization predicts that the counterfeiting business will generate $75 billion in revenues in 2010 - a 92 percent increase from 2005. California has lead the nation with landmark prescription drug regulations which aim to protect California consumers from these potentially lethal drugs.Using IBM technology, GSMS is now able to act in accordance with California's law which take effect in 2015, as well as new electronic pedigree regulations that are emerging in other states and countries. Having used IBM's system in its own operations, GSMS is now offering pedigree compliance services to pharmaceutical manufacturers seeking a quick and proven way of addressing regulations taking effect in California and around the world. The pioneering work with GSMS overcomes many of the previous obstacles to creating an effective electronic pedigree program faced by small to mid-size pharmaceutical companies. New improvements in technology, lower costs, as well as new industry standards for sharing and analyzing information are making it possible for drug companies of any size to ensure their drugs are authentic -- while enabling the use of smart technology to track movement of drugs from the manufacturing floor to the pharmacy. An electronic pedigree is an electronic record containing information on all the steps a pharmaceutical takes as it moves from the manufacturer, to wholesalers, and finally, to pharmacies or hospitals. California has mandated that these pedigrees be maintained in an interoperable electronic system so that all participants in the drug supply chain can access the electronic records."The pharmaceutical industry giants won't have a problem complying with the California regulations, but many smaller players in the industry don't have the resources to do it on their own," said Jim Stroud, president and CEO, Golden State Medical Supply, Inc. "However, our company has been serializing at the saleable unit and RFID tagging at the case level since February of this year. The system IBM built for us will not only benefit GSMS, but also small and mid-sized drug manufacturers around the world."Serialized drug pedigree information is gathered by IBM's WebSphere Premises Server software, and transmitted to IBM's InfoSphere Traceability Server, which allows GSMS to manage and share information with trading partners to authenticate pharmaceuticals. The software is compliant with both GS1/EPCglobal's Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) standard, and its Drug Pedigree Standard. In addition to using the IBM system for electronic pedigree, it can also address business needs such as chargeback resolution, targeted recall and expiration management."Now is the time for the pharmaceutical industry to inject technology into their operations to make the drugs we take safer," said Katherine Holland, general manager, global life sciences, IBM. "The key to a smarter, safer drug supply is the use of a unique serial number on every bottle of medicine. Using IBM technology, GSMS can help drug manufacturers around the world address the growing threat of counterfeit drugs."About Golden State Medical Supply, Inc.In business since 1986, Golden State Medical Supply, Inc. is a contract manufacturer and third party logistics provider licensed by the California State Board of Pharmacy to sell pharmaceuticals and registered with the FDA and licensed to manufacturer pharmaceuticals by the California Department of Public Health, Food and Drug Branch to our valued partners in the medical industry. • Notice Concerning Fake Maxell Watch Batteries
Thank you for using our products. We have been informed that there are batteries on the market carrying the Maxell brand that differ from genuine Maxell batteries. We have examined these batteries and conclude that both batteries and packaging are fake. Each battery carries the 'maxell' logo and code number 'SR621SW', which indicates the battery is a silver oxide battery. However, our analysis shows that these are not silver oxide but alkaline button batteries.Silver oxide batteries are ideal for use in watches as they provide a stable voltage and low risk of leakage.Alkaline button batteries are cheaper, their voltage weakens gradually with use, and they have a higher risk of leakage than their silver oxide counterparts. Therefore, they are not suitable for use in watches. Moreover, alkaline button batteries have a lower capacity than silver oxide batteries and last much less time. There may also be safety concerns if the button batteries have been manufactured without adequate quality control. Please note that Maxell cannot guarantee that use of these fake batteries will not result in battery leakage, shorter battery life and even battery explosion. The differences between genuine Maxell batteries and the fake batteries are shown below:1) Appearance Fake batteryGenuine Maxell batteryThe minus side of the Maxell silver oxide battery has been polished to reduce contact resistance.* We could not find any such polishing marks on the fake battery.*Some models are gold plated instead of the polishing for better electrical contact.2) Battery voltageThe open circuit voltage (OCV) of a new silver oxide battery is between 1.580 and 1.620. The voltages of the fake batteries are between 1.522 and 1.556. Based on this OCV, we can conclude that these are alkaline button batteries.— WebWireID93418 —Business AnnouncementsConsumer ElectronicsElectronicsWebWire? The world's premier student technology competition invites students to apply their technology know-how and artistic talents to tackle the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.REDMOND, Wash. - This year, more than 300,000 students from 100 countries are registered for Imagine Cup 2009, a Microsoft Corp. competition that challenges them to use their technology skills and imagination to address the world's toughest problems. Winning students from local, national, regional and online competitions will compete at the Imagine Cup finals in Cairo from July 3–9.Now in its seventh year, Imagine Cup continues to encourage students around the globe to imagine a better world in which people are empowered by technology created by the students' talent and innovation. The United Nations has identified some of the hardest challenges in the world today in its Millennium Development Goals — ranging from halving extreme poverty and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS to providing universal primary education. Microsoft is calling on young programmers, artists and technologists to rise to this challenge: 'Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems facing us today.'Yesterday in Warsaw, Poland, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that the Imagine Cup 2010 Finals will take place in Poland, a country with a track record of producing highly skilled IT students as well as successful Imagine Cup entrants.'The Imagine Cup inspires students to use their creativity to help change the world for the better by discovering new ways to use technology to address some of the world's toughest challenges,' Ballmer said. 'Some of the greatest innovations and companies of tomorrow will be created by today's students. The Imagine Cup presents a fantastic opportunity for them to compete with students from around the world.'Students will participate in categories ranging from software design and games development to multimedia and self-expression. Their work will showcase new solutions to many of the world's most difficult issues, while giving them the opportunity to win generous cash prizes. This year, Microsoft is calling on participants to bring their ideas to life in nine categories, each catering to a different talent:• Software Design. Students create real-world software and services applications that use Microsoft tools and technology — including mobile devices. Competitors are asked to demonstrate innovation on the Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft Windows platform as they conceive, test and build applications that will help improve the world they live in.• Embedded Development. This category offers students who've always enjoyed playing games a chance to create their own game and, at the same time, help change the global community.• Robotics and Algorithm. This invitational is a mathematical obstacle course where students must navigate a series of brainteasers, code challenges and algorithmic puzzles to demonstrate their ability to understand the potential of robots in our world.• IT Challenge. Students are challenged to develop, deploy and maintain IT systems that are elegant, functional, robust and secure. This demanding competition requires students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in the science of networks, databases and servers. They also need to show their analytical abilities and make tough decisions in IT environments.• MashUp. The object of the MashUp competition is to create a new and useful Web 2.0 application. Students will use Microsoft PopFly to leverage current third-party data and services available on the Internet to create a new and unique tool that is effectively accessed by other Internet users.• Photography. In this competition, students communicate a story that explores a critical issue through a photo essay of inspiring still images.• Short Film. This category challenges students to create an original short film and also demonstrate excellence in filmmaking at all levels from concept art to polished editing.• Design. Students create an innovative design for easier-to-use machines that help improve human interactions. Students are encouraged to use the power of technology as means to manifest their creativity. After advancing through the online, local and regional Imagine Cup competitions, qualifying students will gather in Egypt at the Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals in July 2009 to present their entries to a panel of judges from academia and the technology industry. The Hi5-3G provides 2-channel RCA style audio outputs for separate audio monitoring if needed. The HDP2 is a miniature HD/SD-SDI to DVI-D converter for digital display devices, such as LCD, DLP, and Plasma monitors or projectors. Using a very high quality scaling engine and de-interlacer, the HDP2 will automatically size 4:3 or 16:9 video inputs to many DVI-D monitors. For appropriate monitor configurations, scaling is automatically 1-to-1—for example, displaying 1920x1080 video on a WUXGA (1920x1200) monitor. The HDP2 will also automatically adapt the input frame rate for monitor compatibility. In addition, the HDP2 provides 2-channel audio monitoring and a looping output of the SDI input. The HDP2 is designed for general monitoring, and is perfect for use in applications such as general post-production reference monitoring, client monitoring, presentation, projection, corporate displays, kiosk applications, and much more. The HDP2 also supports HDMI v1.3a Deep Color (with a DVI to HDMI adapter). In the HDMI mode, Deep Color is supported at 30/36 bits per pixel with 8-channel audio. HDP2 replaces the hugely popular HDP.Both the Hi5-3G and the HDP2 provide USB connectivity to allow for easy PC/Mac setup and field upgrades, and are backed by AJA's five-year warranty.'We've been making many of the industry's most popular video converter products for over fifteen years and our Mini-Converters are known for their great price/performance ratio,' said Nick Rashby, President, AJA Video Systems. 'With these two new Mini-Converters we're building new and unique functionality that responds directly to our customer's demands.'Hi5-3G has an MSRP of $690, and HDP2 also has an MSRP of $690. Both products will be available in May via AJA's worldwide network of channel partners.— WebWireID93232 —Business AnnouncementsComputer PeripheralsElectronicsFilm and Motion PictureWebWire? • Philips presents world's first OLED-based interactive lighting concepts
Concepts create a whole new lighting experience, offer interactivity and revolutionary design possibilitiesMilan, Italy – Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) today premiered the world's first OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) -based interactive lighting concepts, created for both consumer as well as professional use, during the Euroluce International Lighting Fair in Milan. The concepts are intuitive and interactive in use, boast ultra flat shapes, soft light-effects and design possibilities never before seen in lighting products. The result is lighting that goes beyond mere illumination – it becomes an experience in itself. The concepts are the culmination of years of research that have placed Philips at the cutting edge of solid-state lighting. 'In addition to our expertise in LEDs, we are now unlocking the great potential of flat, energy-efficient OLEDs,' says Rudy Provoost, CEO of Philips Lighting. Our concepts demonstrate a new light ambiance, novel design possibilities and unique interactivity of light and human gesture.'For homes, Philips is presenting four different concepts: standing, wall-mounted, desk-top and ceiling luminaires. All incorporate glowingly radiant flat OLED light panels, supplemented with LUXEON Power LEDs for the functional lighting part. Each model has different intuitive interactive capabilities. The ceiling concept, for example, features a balance of up-light and down-light that can be changed or dimmed to alter the ambience in a room with a gesture of the hand. All of the concepts on show share a sleek, streamlined design that makes them as decorative as they are functional.Philips is also unveiling an OLED installation for professional segments in large spaces, such as reception areas. As in the case of the consumer concepts, this installation is both functional and highly experiential, featuring a luminescent wall that reacts directly to passers-by, creating mirrored reflections of their 'shadows' amid the light. Philips invites to 'play' with this new technology and experience it as much more than a light only: a softly glowing mirror, an interactive tool, a very aesthetic light source and an inspiration for further products and applications.'The global lighting industry is in a state of great transition,' continued Rudy Provoost. 'Economic and environmental concerns are driving all of us to make the move from incandescent lamps to cleaner, more energy-efficient solutions as quickly as we can. The solid state lighting revolution is happening at the right time. What's particularly exciting is that LEDs and OLEDs offer the possibility to create new lighting designs and experiences that weren't achievable in the past. With these new concepts Philips is adding a whole new dimension to lighting and the way it can enhance people's lives.'The Consumer Luminiares OLED concepts are on show at the Lirio by Philips booth, Hall 14 stand E54, the interactive installations in Superstudio Piu (booth 18.2), Via Tortona 27, Milan (www.superstudiogroup.com)Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) is a diversified Health and Well-being company, focused on improving people's lives through timely innovations. • Logitech Announces Q4, Full-Year Financial Results for FY 2009
FREMONT, Calif., ROMANEL-SUR-MORGES, Switzerland - Logitech International (SIX: LOGN) (Nasdaq: LOGI) today announced financial results for the fourth quarter and full year of Fiscal Year 2009.Sales for Q4 were $408 million, a decrease of 32 percent compared to $601 million in the same quarter last year. The Company posted an operating loss of $43 million, compared to operating income of $66 million in the same quarter a year ago. The net loss for Q4 was $35 million ($0.20 per share) compared to net income of $60.3 million ($0.32 per share) in Q4 FY 2008. During the fourth quarter, Logitech recorded pre-tax restructuring charges of $20.5 million ($15.9 million after tax or $0.09 per diluted share). Gross margin for Q4 was 25.0 percent compared to 35.6 in Q4 FY 2008.Logitech's retail sales for Q4 FY 2009 declined by 32 percent year over year, with sales down by 36 percent in EMEA, 33 percent in the Americas, and 14 percent in Asia. OEM sales were down by 33 percent.'The primary cause of the year-over-year decline in our Q4 sales was the economic downturn,' said Gerald P. Quindlen, Logitech president and chief executive officer. 'Our sales were negatively impacted by the combination of weak consumer demand and the accelerating reset by our channel partners of their weeks of supply. A contributing factor to our sales decline was the effect of the stronger U.S. dollar.'Consumer demand for our products in Q4 was much stronger than our reported sales would suggest. According to data we receive from our channel partners, sell-through of our products in the Americas and EMEA, our two largest regions, was down 14 percent and 7 percent, respectively, in Q4 compared to the prior year. Additionally, our most current data shows that our market share is largely stable – and in some cases growing – across most of our product categories.'Historically the amount of Logitech product carried by our channel partners has been a function of the high sell-through rate of our products. With the continuing economic downturn, the sudden decline in the sell-through rate of our products resulted in our channel partners significantly lowering their levels of required supply. We are reaching alignment with this new level through promotional activities and reduced shipments. Our actions will accelerate, in Q1, leading to equilibrium in the channel in Q2. In view of these dynamics, we expect Q1 to be the low point of the year for operating results.'During Q4 we achieved more than a $100 million reduction in our inventory on a sequential basis. I am also very pleased with our cash management during the quarter. We exited Fiscal Year 2009 with approximately a half billion dollars in cash, up sequentially, and virtually unchanged year over year, in spite of the turmoil in the global economy during the period.'As we successfully achieve realignment with partners' required supply levels, continue to realize the benefits of our recent restructuring – which, together with our efforts to reduce variable spending, we expect to reduce our cost structure by $100 million annually – and introduce our new lineup of products designed for today's consumer, I believe we will have the elements in place for a return to earnings growth for the second half of Fiscal 2010.'Beyond the current fiscal year, there are significant, ongoing trends that will spur our growth as we move past the impact of the current macroeconomic environment. Logitech fulfills the increasing demand for interfaces between people and the expanding digital world across multiple platforms and user environments. This presents an opportunity for us as we introduce products that enhance the usability and experiences of these new platforms. Our advantages of scale, strong distribution, brand leadership and an unparalleled innovation engine continue to position us for long-term growth.'Full-Year Financial ResultsFor the full fiscal year, sales were $2.2 billion, down from $2.4 billion in FY 2008. Operating income was $110 million, down from $287 million a year ago. Net income was $107 million ($0.59 per share) compared to net income of $231 million ($1.23 per share) in the prior year. Excluding restructuring charges and an impairment loss on short-term investments, net income was $126 million ($0.69 per share). Gross margin for FY 2009 was 31.3 percent compared to 35.8 percent in FY 2008.OutlookBecause of the continued impact of the global economic environment on Logitech's business visibility, the Company will provide a one-quarter outlook in each quarter throughout Fiscal Year 2010. For the first quarter of FY 2010, which is historically the smallest quarter for both sales and operating leverage, Logitech expects sales within the range of $300 million to $320 million, gross margin within the range of 24 percent to 26 percent, and an operating loss between $40 million and $50 million. The Company expects Q1 to be the low point of the year for operating results.Earnings Teleconference and WebcastLogitech will hold an earnings teleconference on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and 14:30 Central European Summer Time. A live webcast of the call, along with presentation slides, will be available on the Logitech corporate Web site at http://ir.logitech.com.About LogitechLogitech is a world leader in personal peripherals, driving innovation in PC navigation, Internet communications, digital music, home-entertainment control, gaming and wireless devices. • Epson Imaging Devices Eliminates 2-Aminoethanol from Its Overseas Operations
TOKYO, Japan - Epson Imaging Devices Corporation announced today that it has eliminated the use of 2-aminoethanol, a chemical substance covered by the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register ("PRTR"), from its overseas manufacturing subsidiary in China, Suzhou Epson Co., Ltd. (SZE), as of March 31, 2009. The Epson Imaging Devices Group achieved the full elimination of 2-aminoethanol from all of its sites in Japan in July, 2007, meaning that it has now been eliminated from all Group operations.Epson Imaging Devices currently uses some 200 different chemical substances and manages them all in accordance with both legal regulations and the global push for environmental protection. Nine substances*1 of which Epson Imaging Devices uses more than 100kg per year are categorized as Class I Designated Chemical Substances under Japan's Law for PRTR and Promotion of Chemical Management, meaning that they may damage human health and the ecosystem. Epson Imaging Devices discloses how much of these substances it uses in its Environmental Report and on its website. In the case of PRTR substances of which it uses more than one ton per year, Epson Imaging Devices also reports this information annually to the relevant government authorities.Since 2-aminoethanol was the Class I Designated Chemical Substance used most, Epson Imaging Devices has been striving since 2003 toward the ambitious goal of eliminating this substance from its Japanese sites in fiscal 2007 (April 2007 to March 2008) and from its manufacturing subsidiary in China, Suzhou Epson Co., Ltd. (SZE), in fiscal 2008. Epson Imaging Devices has put particular effort into reducing the environmental impact of its Head Office (Tottori), given its status as the company's main plant and its influence on overall operations, and 2-aminoethanol was completely eliminated from this plant in January 2007. As for the Toyoshina Plant, which previously used a large amount of 2-aminoethanol, the company has worked toward the same goal and achieved the complete elimination ahead of schedule in July 2007.2-aminoethanol is a main constituent of a stripping solution used in photolithography, one of the preproduction processes performed in the manufacture of LCD panels. Epson Imaging Devices successfully eliminated it by switching to a proprietary alternative chemical while also maintaining quality and reducing costs. This has produced major benefits, with the amount of the alternative chemical required less than half of the equivalent amount for 2-aminoethanol and the cost of the alternative also half that of the eliminated substance. The complete elimination of 2-aminoethanol, of which Epson Imaging Devices used 210 tons in fiscal 2005, has enabled a dramatic reduction in overall use of PRTR substances (see Fig.1 below).Based on its corporate stance and environmental policy as a member of the Epson Group, Epson Imaging Devices engages in a range of environmental-conservation activities, including developing eco-considerate products, managing the substances contained in its products, recycling, maximizing energy efficiency in manufacturing, and making optimal use of resources. Epson Imaging Devices will make further efforts to reduce the use of chemical substances covered by the PRTR.*1 In fiscal 2006. Seven such substances were used in fiscal 2007 (prior to the elimination of 2-aminoethanol).Epson is a global leader in imaging products including printers, 3LCD projectors and small- and medium-sized LCDs. With an innovative and creative culture, Epson is dedicated to exceeding the vision and expectations of customers worldwide with products known for their superior quality, functionality, compactness and energy efficiency.Epson is a network of 93,279 employees in 107 companies around the world, and is proud of its ongoing contributions to the global environment and to the communities in which it is located. Led by the Japan-based Seiko Epson Corp., the Group had consolidated sales of 1,347 billion yen in fiscal 2007.— WebWireID93121 —Business AnnouncementsElectronic ComponentsElectronicsEnvironmentSemiconductorsWebWire?
